Victor and his wife Elena in Courchevel

More than 300 guests are flying to Courchevel to help Pinchuk — listed by Time magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people — celebrate his 50th birthday Saturday evening.

The guest list is a closely guarded secret, but President Clinton reportedly has been invited, Pinchuk having attended his 60th birthday bash in New York in 2006. Christina Aguilera, in France to promote her new film, "Burlesque," also reportedly will attend.

Pinchuk, who also owns a media empire that includes six television stations and three newspapers, has one of the world's largest modern art collections and is married to the daughter of former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. He counts Elton John and Paul McCartney among his friends.

Guests will be served food prepared by celebrated French chef Alain Ducasse, along with vodka, vintage wines and champagne. Entertainment will include the famed Cirque du Soleil troupe, which is being flown in from Canada, and a full fireworks display.

But the event is not to everyone's taste.

"Six million dollars for a party ... it's obscene," said one skier in the resort, who was interviewed by telephone and requested anonymity. "It's particularly scandalous because so many people in France are having trouble trying to make ends meet, let alone buy Christmas presents, because of the [economic] crisis."

Mayor Gilbert Blanc-Tailleur insisted there was nothing shocking about the party.

"If this gentleman didn't celebrate his birthday in Courchevel, he would no doubt go somewhere else abroad in a Swiss or Austrian ski resort. That would be a pity for our country," he told the newspaper Le Parisien. "So it's a good thing for France and for our resort, where the quality of services is well known and where it will give business to our hotels."

He added that the Courchevel authorities had asked that 150 children be allowed to see the circus rehearsals.

Adeline Roux, director of Courchevel's tourist office, agreed with the mayor. "It's a private event so there's nothing to say," she told the newspaper.

Pinchuk's media office refused to comment on the party.

However, a young chambermaid in the resort was not impressed.

"I slave away all winter for a miserable wage and then when I see how some people can spend millions in a single evening it disgusts me," she told Le Parisien. "We are on another planet here."

Courchevel has been the preferred winter playground of billionaires from the former Soviet Union in recent years. Mikhail Prokhorov, the chief executive of Russian mining giant Norilsk Nickel, hit the headlines in 2007 when French police raided the hotel he and friends were staying in at the resort. They arrested 25 people and accused Prokhorov of running a prostitution ring.

No charges were filed and Prokhorov was allowed to return to Russia.

Hugh Hefner and Cristal Harris in love

Love is beautiful and is in the air for Hugh,84, and Crystal,24;fonte-Paris Match

Parliament approved the reelection of Nouri Maliki

fonte/wikipédia
Nouri Kamil Mohammed Hasan al-Maliki (Arabic: نوري كامل محمّد حسن المالكي, transliterated Nūrī Kāmil al-Mālikī; born June 20, 1950), also known as Jawad al-Maliki or Abu Esraa, is the Prime Minister of Iraq and the secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party. Al-Maliki and his government succeeded the Iraqi Transitional Government. His 37-member Cabinet was approved by the National Assembly and sworn in on May 20, 2006.

Al-Maliki begin his political career as a Shia dissident under Saddam Hussein's regime in the late 1970s and rose to prominence after he fled a death sentence into exile for 24 years. During his time abroad, he became a senior leader of Dawa, coordinated the activities of anti-Saddam guerillas and built relationships with Iranian and Syrian officials whose help he sought in overthrowing Saddam. Al-Maliki's constitutional mandate will last until 2010. On April 26, 2006, al-Maliki stopped using the pseudonym Jawad.[1] However, the pseudo- or code name "Abu Esraa" (father of Esraa - his eldest daughter) is still heard on Iraqi satellite media every now and then, because it is very common in Arabic culture (and in Iraqi culture in particular) to call someone with his eldest son/daughter's name especially by his close friends and followers. Al-Maliki is married to Fareeha Khalil, with whom he had four daughters and two sons.

Asma et Bachar el-Assad in Paris

Fonte/
Paris Match.
Asma al-Assad. eu sou Síria, onde nasci, sempre me senti na Síria.

Eu tento me conectar com a verdade.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis stories about

Vanity Fair.
To my extreme annoyance, neither author of the Jackie-as-editor bios (see one, Jackie as Editor: The Literary Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, excerpted in the January issue) interviewed me for her book. After all, I worked a mere heartbeat away from Jackie (if not actually in the same building) in the early 1980s when I was an associate editor at The Dial Press, which had been acquired by Delacorte before being subsumed by Doubleday, where Jackie got her second job as an editor. True, I have no actual first-hand stories about the former first lady as Max Perkins, but I hungrily collected other people’s Jackie stories, which, it must be admitted, were sometimes more than a few generations removed from the actual event by the time they got to me. These stories may not be accurate, but they are here.

Despite many attempts over the years (including getting on my knees and begging), I never could get the two people I knew who were closest to Jackie to tell me a single thing about her. These would be Lisa Drew, who was a distinguished Doubleday editor in the Jackie era and later editor-in-chief of Scribners, and the infuriatingly discreet Scott Moyers, who had been Jackie’s editorial assistant and now works at the Wylie literary agency. Actually, Lisa did tell me one story: Jackie had piped hot water into the toilets of her Martha’s Vineyard vacation house. (Don’t hate me, Lisa.)

On her first day at Doubleday , Jackie, like every new employee, was given a voucher worth three or four bucks toward the price of lunch at the cafeteria. To everyone’s amazement, Jackie actually used hers. She went to the sandwich counter and waited patiently while Maisie (probably not her real name, but it should have been), the famed Doubleday hash-slinger, finished whatever she was doing. Maisie had her back to Jackie and did not rush, while the lunchtime crowd collectively held its breath. Did Maisie not know who was waiting? Would she embarrass herself and the whole publishing house by an unseemly reaction when she recognized the new employee? Would she—shudder—ask for an autograph?

Finally Maisie turned. “So, Jackie,” she said nonchalantly in her trademark hash-slinger accent. “What’ll it be?”

For a time, Jackie’s boss at Doubleday was Phil Pochoda, who had been my first boss at Pantheon Books. Phil had bolted the Ph.D. program in philosophy at Princeton to become a book editor. Brash and irreverent by nature, he still had a bit of the scruffy grad student about him, and was probably not properly awed by Jackie, or, more likely, liked to pretend he wasn’t. He sent her a bouquet of flowers once, but then ruined it all by responding to her thank-you with, “I like to take care of my people!” Jackie later told a colleague she did not think of herself as “his people.”

Phil particularly infuriated Jackie at an editorial meeting, at which a proposal for a book called The Rolling Stone Book of Teenage Sex was being considered. The editors were weighing the pros and cons, and Jackie spoke up to offer her opinion. “If I were writing this book…” she began, and Phil jumped in with, “If you were writing this book, we’d make ten million dollars!” Jackie didn’t find this terribly funny.

My friend, the literary agent Joy Harris, owns what surely must be the most valuable eBay item of all time: a copy of Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk inscribed to Joy, the book’s agent, by the author and by Jackie, who was the editor. It was quite a coup for a literary agent to sell a book to Jackie. Roz Targ, famous for her big hats, would mention she had done so in virtually every conversation she had for decades. She might still be talking about it, for all I know. Joy actually got to go out to lunch with Jackie, to Billy’s, a now-defunct chophouse in the east 50s, where they ate hamburgers and chain-smoked. To Joy’s astonishment, Jackie paid not with a credit card but in cash. Joy also remembers talking to Jackie on the phone once when Jackie was trying to eat a sandwich. Finally the former first lady said, “This [trying to chew and talk at the same time] is just awful. Excuse me a minute.” She put down the phone and chewed away while Joy listened.

I have more Jackie stories, like the one involving the nun, the naked man, and the elevator, but I’m saving them for my memoirs.

Shaikh Khalid Al khalifa Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain speak about diplomacy

fonte/Gulf News.
Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al KhalifaImage Credit: BNAManama: Three days before hosting the US secretary of state, at the centre of a deep controversy over leaked diplomatic reports, Bahrain's foreign minister has stressed the importance of quiet diplomacy.

"Quiet diplomacy is what we need," Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa said. "Documents show up later in accordance with laws of secrecy in different countries," he wrote, tweeting his view on the global publication of US accounts of private meetings with leaders and senior officials.

Bahrain on Friday will host the Manama Dialogue, an annual security conference that brings together political and defence leaders from more than 25 countries.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on her first visit to Bahrain, will deliver the opening speech of the December 3-5 high profile meeting to be attended by the foreign ministers of several countries, including Iran's Manouchehr Mottaki.

Clinton is expected to refer either in her speech on Friday evening or in her press conference to the leaked diplomatic messages by US diplomats reporting on private conversations with country leaders or giving a candid assessment of them.

However, Shaikh Khalid, a veteran diplomat who served Bahrain in the US and Britain, has been insisting since the first leaked cables were posted on the internet on the importance of quiet and private communications. "Diplomacy is not about lying. It's about serving your country's interests and building bridges publicly and quietly," he wrote.

The minister warned that "WikiLeaks is weakening diplomacy in general and US diplomacy in particular. Not good for global stability. We need more diplomacy."

In another instance, Shaikh Khalid challenged skeptics to address serious issues without confidential work.

"Anyone believing that one can handle the Korea situation without also confidential diplomacy? Anyone? Anywhere?," he wrote.

Answering a question on whether some people should be "scared" over the leaks, the foreign minister wrote: "Scared of what:)?! These are cables from diplomats that include their understanding of various matters."

On a more personal level, he wrote "but tell me who doesn't have anything to hide? Secrecy is part of everyone's work and life."By Habib Toumi, Bureau Chief

Queen Elisabeth in Abu Dhabi

Queen Elizabeth II with an UAE official at Shaikh Zayed Mosque in the capital.
Dubai : As Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip landed in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday on their first state visit to the federation since 1979, London-based pressure groups have urged the monarch to highlight the increasing number of British investors jailed in the UAE for financial crimes.

UK figures show 59 Britons are in Dubai jails, 70 per cent of whom are behind bars due to financial crimes such as bouncing cheques, said the lobby group Fair Trials International and Prisoners Abroad.

"We have noticed a marked increase in the number of UAE cases and, in particular, the proportion of Britons detained for financial crimes, representing 70 per cent of cases," the group's letter published in the British media said.

The Financial Times reported that a "similar number" of Britons are unable to leave the emirate pending resolution of legal issues. Most of the estimated 120,000 British citizens in the UAE live in Dubai.

Meanwhile, during her visit, the Queen is expected to unveil the design of the new Shaikh Zayed Museum, designed by British architects Foster and Partners, to be built on Saadiyat Island jointly with the British Museum.

The Queen will fly to Oman on Thursday.

Brian Lenihan, Ireland's finance minister, will discuss the situation Economic Crisis in Ireland .

Fonte : The Guardian
An increasingly isolated Irish government was coming under mounting pressure tonight to seek an EU or International Monetary Fund bailout within 24 hours amid fears that contagion from its crippled banking sector might spread through the weaker eurozone countries.

Portugal, Spain, the European central bank and opposition parties urged Brian Cowen's coalition government to remove the threat of a second crisis in six months by putting a firewall between Ireland and its 15 partners in the single currency.

With finance ministers from the eurozone due to hold emergency talks tomorrow night, financial markets were expecting Dublin to finalise negotiations with the EU over the terms of a deal to allow Ireland to rescue banks laid low by the collapse of the country's construction boom.

"The Irish problem is spreading, but it could get more volatile," said Ashok Shah, chief investment officer at London Capital, a fund management firm. "They have to get this bailout, they have a period of time before it gets impossible, before nasty things happen. The longer they leave it, the more difficult it will get."

Portugal has seen its borrowing costs rocket along with Ireland's as speculation has grown that it too may have to consider a bailout. Its finance minister, Fernando Teixeira dos Santos, told the Wall Street Journal his country had been hit by a contagion effect caused by fears about Ireland's ability to pay its debts.

"I would not want to lecture the Irish government on that," he said. "I want to believe they will decide to do what is most appropriate for Ireland and the euro. I want to believe they have the vision to take the right decision."

The Bank of Spain governor, Miguel Ángel Fernández Ordóñez, a member of the European Central Bank's governing council, told a banking conference in Madrid he expected an "appropriate reaction" by Ireland to calm the markets. He later told reporters: "The situation in the markets has been negative due in some part to the lack of a decision by Ireland. It's not up to me to make a decision on Ireland, it's Ireland that should take the decision at the right moment." Ewald Nowotny, another ECB governing council member, said in a radio interview the EU wanted a "quick, good solution to Ireland, so that there will be no spillover" to other heavily indebted countries such as Portugal and Spain.

Weekend reports that Ireland was holding bailout talks with the EU helped ease pressure on Irish borrowing costs today, with the yield on benchmark 10-year Irish bonds easing to 8.1% from a peak of over 9% last week. The premium that investors demand to hold Irish 10-year bonds over benchmark German bunds (known as the spread) also fell to 545 basis points, down from a record 652 basis points last Thursday.

Analysts warned, however, that the selling would quickly resume if Ireland tried to go it alone. "The expectation of a bailout for Ireland helped its spreads to recover from last week's capitulation," said Gavan Nolan, a credit analyst at Markit. "It's good to talk." Despite Ireland's insistence that it doesn't need to be rescued, investors say the country needs support, given the fragility of its moribund banking system, and the high borrowing costs limiting the capacity of companies to raise funds.

Ireland's Europe minister, Dick Roche, said rumours that it was on the verge of seeking a bailout could be "very, very dangerous".

He conceded: "There is continuous talk going on backwards and forwards about the level of our debt but the suggestion that that constitutes going to the IMF or the bailout is just irresponsible." Ireland's opposition finance spokesman, Michael Noonan, said he believed European intervention was "under way" and matters would come to a head within 24 hours. The government, he said, was "fighting a rearguard action for appearances purposes".

Noonan said a bailout could lead to Ireland being suspended from the bond markets for three or four years.

Catherine Deneuve em Bordeaux

Fonte/ Paris Match.
Avant-Premiére : the movie "Potiche"

Al Khaleej newspaper write about Bahrein' Kingdom

At the level of history and the present, and at the level of future pieces, representing Bahrain in the memory of Arab and Gulf Point Hope radioactive always, was of the Arab people in this region, the port of civilization and trade, culture, and it went first migrations seek knowledge and decent living, and which was launched Vanguards Gulf community centers to the Enlightenment over Arab land.

The Bahrain was dear, and still is, a safety valve region, and portfolio balance, and evidence of coexistence between the spectrums of people per afternoon, where the national floor and ceiling, and good citizenship obsessed with everyone, and where the multiplicity of visions and ideas dedicated to serve the movement of progress, and deepen the titles of the Grand National.

From here, the open dialogue on the horizon of freedom, starting from the base of diversity and difference, an absolute necessity in the Kingdom of Bahrain today. Reform steps, which began in 2001 must continue, and all done for the sake of consolidating democracy and activating the political movement should continue, while the red line is the security of Bahrain, and no one's interest to harm it in any form. Required everyone will agree on the general principles that characterized the march past years, but with the activation of the values of freedom, justice and dialogue, and renounce violence as a means of protest or for any reason whatsoever, in the achievement of national unity, and strengthen the social fabric of civilization in all of backgrounds.

The reality of the love of Bahrain, and the strong concern to provide security and stability, is said here a sincere and heartfelt: the effort of collective towards maintaining the Bahrain society and the homeland and a space illuminated in our region, the question of the inevitability of fate, it is not wise to stand in the middle of the road towards the future seemed at the time of times, building on the experience of reality, shiny and bright, more strength and confidence.

And hope that the recent events and temporary emergency, and a negative impact in the life of the country and the people dear brother, and the underlying message to Bahrain, also they are part and an isolated island, and what happens there affects our good and bad. God is far from Bahrain and the region of evil and unpleasant surprises, and save them from all evil.

And our hearts with Bahrain and Bahrain, so goes the passion as you say the policy. Bahrain, which is the heart of action and interaction, and geography is at the heart of every Arab and Gulf, and not acquire reality only fashioned by a secure and stable.

Abdullah Kanoo YBA Kanoo Group's president dies in Manama on Sunday

Gulf News.
photoManama: A large number of people have paid tribute to Abdullah Kanoo, one of Bahrain's leading businessmen, and the chairman and chief executive officer of the Yousuf Bin Ahmad (YBA) Kanoo Group, who died on Sunday.

Born in Bahrain in 1927, Kanoo died at his home in Manama. He was buried on Sunday morning at the Manama cemetery, in a funeral that attracted thousands, including relatives, friends, diplomats and businessmen. People came from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and further a field.

Kanoo's acute entrepreneurial achievements and his devotion to philanthropic activities in particular marked him out. Considered a high achiever and a deeply compassionate man, he was much loved and admired by all who knew him.

Closely connected with Bahrain's business and social development in the 21st century, Abdullah Kanoo played an instrumental role in the progress of the country.

His business activities spanned a wide spectrum that included travel, aircraft handling, machinery sales and services, shipping, general trade, oilfield supplies and services, manufacturing, chemicals, cargo services, insurance and investments. He was the head of several companies in Bahrain and in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

On the charity front, he built health centres, medical facilities, homes for the elderly and mosques. Three health centres and several mosques in Bahrain were built through his generous donations.

In a tribute to him, Dr Faisal Al Hamer, said Bahrain would always be grateful to Abdullah Kanoo for his generous contributions in the field of medicine. He cited the 52-bed Kidney Dialysis Centre in Muharraq, as one of his most generous contributions to people's welfare.

A number of prominent members of the business community said that Abdullah Kanoo would be missed.

"We were saddened by the tragic news," Isam Abdullah Fakroo, the chairman of Bahrain Chamber for Commerce and Industry (BCCI), said. "He was one of the most prominent people in Bahrain, who had an outstanding role in leading several business and industrial companies, not only in Bahrain, but well beyond. He also had a great role in humanitarian, social and philanthropic action."

Businessman Jawad Al Hawwaj said Abdullah Kanoo was "an iconic figure whose business prowess and love for others will always be recalled with fondness".

"He had an impressive local, regional and international presence that has endeared him to all."

Farook Al Moayyad, chairman of Y.K. Al Moayyad, said he was a great man and that "his death is a big loss to the business community".

"He was a humble and generous man. Even in the twilight of his life, when it was physically tough for him to move around, he made it a point to attend all social functions," he commented shortly after the announcement of Kanoo's death.

Afnan Al Zayani, a leading businesswoman, described Kanoo as "one of the great architects of Bahrain".

"He left behind a great vacuum that is difficult to fill up," she said.

Yousuf Al Saleh, a businessman, said the legendary businessman would be missed, even though he "will live forever in the hearts of the people".

Prince Charles waiting New Delhi decides to open the Commonwealth Games

(foto/Wikipédia)

New Delhi: India is yet to decide who will open the Commonwealth Games next Sunday, raising the possibility of a snub to Britain's Prince Charles, who was expected to preside over the event, officials say.

Queen Elizabeth, who would normally open the Games as head of the Commonwealth, in May decided against travelling to India and has sent her son Charles in her place.

The move, which drew criticism in India, has led organisers to discuss whether the Indian President Pratibha Patil should instead open the Games in a move that would break with tradition and likely irk the royal family.

"The decision is yet to be taken," the secretary to the Indian president, Archana Datta, told AFP on Monday. "If the decision is taken, I will let the media know."

The Indian ANI news agency quoted unnamed government and Games organising committee sources as saying it would be the president. No one from the organising committee was available to comment to AFP.

An official in the British embassy in New Delhi sought to play down any friction over the role and said protocol for the ceremony was not yet finalised.

"There's no sense of a spat or battle. That's genuinely not true," the spokesman told AFP. "Precisely how the Games are opened has been under discussion for some time. There are numerous ways these things can be done."

He added that there would be "an element of jointness" between the prince and the president.

"Who stands where and who says what is still undecided and now being finalised," he said.

The prince and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, will arrive in Delhi on Saturday and also visit Chandigarh and Jodhpur during a five-day tour.

Queen Rania of Jordan visited three colleges on the second day of the school year

Elizabeth Warren on brilliant interview on consumer credit

foto/LA Times.
that will conceal rather than reveal how much this credit will really cost and what kinds of risks it runs.

But people in different states, for instance, know, in Florida, in Texas, that they can, in a sense, protect their homes ... completamente em falência, por isso eles vão para uma empresa de cartão de crédito e uso, de modo a que possam desempenhar em um processo de falência, ao contrário de, digamos, tirando um empréstimo. completely in bankruptcy, so they'll go to a credit card company and use credit so that they can discharge in a bankruptcy proceeding as opposed to, let's say, taking out an equity loan. It's free money to them, in that sense, and they keep their asset. And what the companies are saying is that the consumers are not stupid; that's why they have high fees, high interest rates in certain cases, and why, in fact, they need to reform the bankruptcy laws themselves.

What credit card companies are saying is that the consumers are being just as rational and profit maximizing as we are.

Você sabe qual é o problema? You know what the problem is? Não há provas de que é assim. There's no evidence that that's so. Consumers in Texas and Florida who could take out a lot more in credit card debt and then waltz into the bankruptcy courts, in fact, are not doing it. The academic studies on where credit card debt is being taken out and where default rates occur and how much people are paying in interest shows no difference between states like Texas and Florida, which would protect the debtors, and states like Massachusetts and Illinois and Arkansas, which would not protect the debtors.

Por que isso acontece? Why is that so? It's because most people, when they take out money on a credit card, do their dead level best to pay it back. " They don't sit and rationally calculate: "Well, now, let's see: If I maxed out on how much I could make on this and take out the maximum amount, I could declare bankruptcy in just 24 more months and ... enrich my wealth." That is a dream of the credit card companies, or maybe it's their nightmare, or maybe it's just their best public relations ploy. There is absolutely zero empirical evidence to back up this claim from the credit card companies. In effect, the credit card companies are sitting around saying, "That's what I'd do if I had the option." But it's not what American consumers are doing. They borrow the money, and they kill themselves trying to pay it back.

Why have credit card profits risen sharply year after year after year, when all those laws are out there protecting people at least in a handful of states? And the answer is, because Americans borrow the money; they do their best to pay it back, and somebody tells them they have to pay it back at 39 percent interest. Their response is to say, "Who are you kidding?" Não. A resposta é dizer, "Eu vou fazer o meu melhor. Receberia US $ 50? Você pegaria $ 75 este mês?" No. Their response is to say, "I'll do my best. Would you take $50? Would you take $75 this month?" e pagar e pagar e pagar. and to pay and to pay and to pay.

I hear you, but then I look at the realities. As empresas querem reformar as leis de falência, porque eles dizem que está sendo abusado. The companies want to reform the bankruptcy laws because they say they're being abused.

No, the companies want to reform the bankruptcy laws because it's a way to further increase the profits. It's a way to cut off the last exit door for middle-class families in financial trouble.

Congresso não concordo com você. Congress doesn't agree with you. Eles uniformemente votar a favor do projeto de lei de falência. They uniformly vote in favor of the bankruptcy bill. Democratas, republicanos, liberais, conservadores ... Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives ... todos eles a vêem como uma grande reforma, e um que o país precisa. they all see it as a great reform, and one the country needs.

Well, let's be clear about Congress and who's had a chance to talk to Congress. The consumer financial services industry has been the single biggest contributor in the 2000 election cycle, in the 2002 election cycle, and they're on target to do it again in the 2004 election cycle. George W. Bush's single biggest contributor to his [2000] presidential campaign was MBNA, the second biggest credit card issuer in the country.

And let's be clear who's on the other side: It's a bunch of middle-class families who are in financial trouble. They don't give money to political action committees; they don't hire a bunch of lobbyists; they don't take out a lot of newspaper ads; they don't get a big public relations campaign going. ... ... This is about as lopsided as you can get in Washington. Sen. [Russ] Feingold, of McCain-Feingold, once remarked that the bankruptcy bill should be the poster child for why we need campaign finance reform in America. It's a great big multibillion-dollar industry talking to Congress, whispering in their ear.(www.pbs.org/frontline)

Boaz Mazor One of the best dressed men of the big apple

Boaz Mazor has worked for Oscar de la Renta for forty years, having now earned that wonderful “At Large” title (although technically he is a vice-president) and this is one of those conversations that made us feel we had met someone who really relishes and celebrates life. He must have his demons because he has depth, but he is an unapologetic maximalist and we loved the exuberance of his apartment and his expansive emphasis on genuine face-to-face connection with people as opposed to the dislocated world of Facebook and Twitter and iPhoning. He was born and brought up in Israel and speaks with a rich, Hebrew-inflected accent that also sounds strongly French, which he also speaks. We loved the lengthy replies he gave to our questions as well his idiosyncratic way with the English language: “Tel Aviv! It’s the heart and the beat of the Middle East! Amazing! And the good looks ... the girls ... the boys.((New York Social Diary)

Reasons for the bankruptcy of Lehman

"It was a judgment at that moment … that making that statement might have even reduced confidence further and led to further pressure," Bernanke said Thursday. "I regret not being more straightforward there because clearly that has supported the mistaken impression that, in fact, we could have done something. We could not have done anything."

Bernanke told the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission that any loan the Fed could have provided Lehman would not have stopped a run on the bank by customers.

"If we lent the money to Lehman," Bernanke said, "we would have saddled the taxpayers with tens of billions of dollars in losses."

The failure of Lehman was a pivotal event in the financial crisis. It led to upheaval in world financial markets and triggered events that led to the decision by the Fed and Treasury Department officials to rescue insurance giant American International Group Inc. and successfully push Congress for the $700-billion bank bailout fund.

The Fed determined that it could rescue AIG because it did have adequate collateral with its diverse insurance assets, Bernanke said.

Bernanke's comments came a day after former Lehman Bros. Chief Executive Richard S. Fuld blamed federal officials for his firm's September 2008 collapse.

Fuld told the commission there was a double standard in the government's decision to deny Lehman the extraordinary assistance given to other investment banks. Fed money could have helped Lehman find a buyer or given it time for a more orderly bankruptcy, he said.

Some members of the commission also have appeared skeptical of the defense by Fed officials that they had no legal way to lend money to Lehman Bros. The Fed can lend money only if it believes that there is sufficient collateral to guarantee it will be paid back.

"It seems to me the decision to allow Lehman to fail was a conscious policy decision," commission Chairman Phil Angelides said.

He said he was not accusing government officials of wanting Lehman to fail, but pointed out there were other factors, such as concerns about the public's reaction to another bailout.

Angelides noted that Bernanke didn't say in his congressional testimony nearly two years ago that the Fed was legally barred from lending to the firm. Bernanke only said that the Fed and Treasury "declined to commit public funds to support" Lehman.

Angelides also said that the commission's investigation had not found any documents showing a legal analysis of a Lehman loan or an analysis of the firm's collateral during the hectic days before its failure when Bernanke and Treasury officials were trying to arrange a sale of the firm to prevent a collapse.

In March 2008, six months before Lehman's failure, the Fed used its emergency power to help save investment bank Bear Stearns by lending JPMorgan Chase & Co. $30 billion to acquire it at a fire-sale price.

But the decision not to help Lehman was based on the Fed's concern that the money would never be repaid, Bernanke said. As a scholar of the Great Depression, Bernanke said he wanted to avoid Lehman's failure to avoid the damaging consequences of its bankruptcy.

"This is my bread and butter, and I believed deeply that if Lehman was allowed to fail, or did fail, the consequences to the U.S. financial system and the U.S. economy would be catastrophic," Bernanke said.

"It was with great reluctance and sadness that I conceded that there was no other option" than to let Lehman fail, he told the commission. "If I could have done anything to save it, I would have saved it."

Sheik Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi Despite not having financial problems, the sheik has injected millions of euros in the Manchester City

The Manchester City Football Club have not problems of money but...

Sheikh Mansour has been forced to inject half a billion pounds in cash into Manchester City to cover his club’s runaway expenditure over the past two years, Digger can reveal. Although that sum exceeds the gross domestic product of the Seychelles and Grenada, Mansour’s spending will not stop there.

There are two main routes through which an owner can directly finance a company: either through debt in the form of shareholder loans, as Roman Abramovich did at the outset of his Chelsea ownership, or through equity. It is via the latter route – by issuing new shares to be sold to himself – that Mansour has capitalised City.

The injection of more than £399m up to December last year, much of which went on covering the £304.9m in shareholder loans that had been racked up with Mansour, was just the start. A statement released to Companies House by the board of the Eastlands club’s parent, Manchester City Limited, said Sheikh Mansour had paid £46.2m in cash for new equity issued in May. “The following resolution was passed by the directors of Manchester City Limited on 5 May 2010: that 21,792,452 new ordinary shares be allotted to Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited in consideration of the cash payment of £46.2m.”

There followed another resolution in January, under the terms of which Mansour has been able to fund the club with intermittent investments of cash. On 13 July another £53m came in to the club from Mansour’s coffers, taking the cash investment in the space of slightly more than three months to £99.4m and to within a whisker of £500m in total. That is just what has been specifically announced to Companies House either through City’s parent company accounts or its general filings.

There are indications that Mansour’s total support for the club may even exceed £650m. According to a statement of capital filed with Companies House in July, accompanying the most recent equity issue, there are now 308,465,127 ordinary shares in issue. Assuming that each one of these cost Mansour £2.12, as all those issued this year have, Mansour will have made £650m available to the club.

Contributing to the runaway expenses under Abu Dhabi’s ownership have been staggering transfer fees. Between September 2008 and December 2009, City’s net expenditure on transfers after player sales was about £200m; another net sum of £100m has been spent on players since then.

The wage burden also takes significant support. It is impossible to know exactly what that amounts to until the club’s next set of accounts are released in February. But given that wages were the key contributor to the club’s £92.6m loss in the 12 months to 31 May last year – since when almost £220m net has been splashed out on new players – it is rising fast.

“[There was] a significant increase in operating expenses – primarily driven by increased playing staff remuneration,” said the club’s chief executive, Garry Cook in his statement in last year’s parent company accounts. “It is therefore expected that there will be further significant operating losses reported in future financial periods.”

So with £300m cash spent on new players after player sales, £82.63m spent on wages in the 12 months to 31 May 2009 – a sum that continues to rise – and losses of £96.2m over the same period, Mansour will have to put his hands in his pockets again. It is lucky they are deep.

Wrongs of image rights
Two former chairmen of one of France’s biggest clubs have received suspended prison sentences for having overseen secret image-rights contracts with players between 1998 and 2003. Laurent Perpère and Francis Graille, who were the two chairmen of Paris Saint-Germain between 1998 and 2005, were sentenced to 12 months and eight months respectively, suspended, in a case that also led to Nike Europe being fined €120,000 (£98,000) for its involvement in assisting with the contracts. A spokesman for Nike did not return Digger’s call yesterday.

The effect of the contracts was that players did not have to make tax and social security payments on a proportion of their earnings from the club. Players such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Nicolas Anelka were the beneficiaries of these contracts, according to French court papers seen by the Guardian. The players have not been accused of wrongdoing.

The case is known to have been monitored by HM Revenue & Customs, which is pursuing action against several English football, rugby and cricket clubs for their use of image rights. It has not shrunk from pursuing criminal charges in the past; Harry Redknapp, Milan Mandaric and Peter Storrie – respectively the former manager, chairman and chief executive of Portsmouth – are set to stand trial next year for allegedly having cheated the public revenue. All deny the charges.

Chopped down
Paul Scholes is not the only one at Manchester United capable of hacking down things that get in his way – but this time it is an innocent tree that has been caught in the crossfire. When photographers arrived at United’s Carrington training ground yesterday they went to take up their normal positions around a tree they have often climbed to take sneak pictures of the action during coaching sessions. However, they discovered it had been chopped down. When asked if Scholes had been in the vicinity at the time, United declined to comment.

Cink counts the pennies
For some golfers, the UK tax regime clearly is, er, taxing. At a time when sports stars across the world are complaining about the punitive nature of our tax laws that demand 50% of every penny they earn from prize money and endorsements, prorated to the time they spend in this country, Stewart Cink clearly has tax on his mind. Even with career earnings of £17.7m to the end of 2009, Cink evidently still likes to count the pennies. “Survey time, kids!” announced last year’s Open golf champion to his 1.2m followers on Twitter.
